Hi my name is Gary Leslie. I qualified as a golf professional in 1982 & have coached here at Welton Manor G.C. since early 1999. AA classified professional I was awarded the honour of becoming a Fellow of the Professional Golfers Association in May 2005 as distinctionof my work. For the past 12 years I combined coaching golf with being a senior lecturer at the University of Lincoln within the School of Sport and Exercise Science. My fields of interest being: Learning styles/approaches, Coaching methods, Sport Development & research. The subjects become more interesting to me when practically implementing the multiple theories within a golf coaching environment.
Here at Welton Manor G.C we welcome all standards of player, from beginner to scratch handicap. To get the most from our coaching time together it is imperative to know what you want from the lessons. It is important to state that I do not coach a method as such. My preference is to work with the player in order to gain best performance from the player’s capabilities. In that sense I will not expect you to perform swing movements that you will find difficult to repeat or to copy certain players that do not have the same physical make up as you. Instead we will work together to negotiate a plan for improvement which will be very much led by you & take into consideration your potential time constraints etc. We will work at your pace, not mine.
The swing movements we make become engrained in our muscle memory therefore from the beginner stage it is vital to nurture desirable swing patterns that lead toward a cultured repeatable swing that allows us to get the best result as often as possible. Too many players come for a lesson when they are just about to give the game up because they have had little or no grounding in the basic fundamentals that underpin most effective swing movements. I will not dwell on where people get their information from or how effective or not it usually is, only that golfers will listen/watch/read all manner of information, try it out, often compounding errors or introducing new errors & even omitting correct elements in their movements! This is mainly due to lack of knowledge. One purpose of the lesson is to offer you knowledge of your swing, what works for you as well as how it can be developed. It is never too late to alter your swing & introduce new swing patterns. Often small elements of the stance, posture, aim, takeaway, backswing, transition, impact, through-swing or finish affect follow on elements within the swing chain. Fixing simple but often hard to identify faults are all it takes to get better results & to feel more confident/comfortable in ourselves.
How about investing some time & money into you & your golf swing? What is stopping you? Hopefully the multi science approach that elite golfers have which includes employing a swing / putting / short game / psychology / physiologist / nutritionist... breaks any stigma that existed in getting some help with what can often be a confusing & yes frustrating game. Please do not think that gaining assistance is seen as a weakness when in fact it will probably be seen as a strength.
Do not just see that investing in you means buying new clubs. Of course it is vital the clubs are correct for you but too often golfers spend a lot of money only to find the problem shot still exists, it could be argued therefore as a waste of money. Might it more beneficial to investigate you & your overall game first? Should you/we identify that it is partly your equipment that is holding you back then for a nominal cost I can assist you in making an informed decision on the right clubs for you.
During our time together we can cover key aspects such as: Swing technique, Specific shots (Bunker, Driving, Irons, putting, chipping), Course management, Psychology, effective practice methods & physical warm up/cool down/gym specific exercises. For those that require in-depth knowledge in some of these areas I would refer you to specialists within that field (I do not profess to be an expert in all these areas).
I hope you are getting a sense of what you can expect from your golf lesson with me? Full, considered attention & a clear program for your development.
We can conduct the lessons either on the range or on the course dependant on your requirements. We can discuss this when booking. The 10 bay floodlit range offers the opportunity to practice year round & the course as we all know is a year round course & rarely closes. So now is the perfect time to commence your golfing development & I would be delighted to be part of that.
Please see lesson tariff at top/foot of the page. Range balls not included in price.

The majority of the tuition is given individually however we do have Junior specific group classes. These happen fortnightly to allow practice time in between. Low cost at A?4 per session (range balls not included) these sessions introduce the young player to the game before progressing them to individual lessons in preparation for more serious play. Our intention is to make the game accessible for all & introduce knowledgeable young players to the game.
If you would like more details of our junior programme please contact Gary:[email protected]
