The first people to walk down the fairways at Welton Manor were the Romans.

Now it is doubtful that a civilisation which threw Christians to the lions would have trifled with such a dull game.

But only 600 years after the Romans gave up on Hibernia and drifted south to warmer climes the Scots were smacking their mashies into their featheries – and someone must have shown them how.

When you are playing that seven iron to the green at Welton you could be walking over the remains of a roman villa – or maybe a greenside condominium?

Ceaser’s lot were definately here. Lincolnshire is littered with evidence of the invaders and Welton has its share. When developing the course all sorts of artefacts were found and there is a display in the clubhouse of Romano-British pottery and coins – or maybe they were ball markers?
